Asobi Asobase’s Heartwarming Portrayal of True Friendship (And Other Horrible Lies)

A little break from Spooktober posts to talk about Asobi Asobase’s 1st episode, which I just watched today. The OP is cute, the girls equally so, and I’m about ready to see some CGDCT!

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

This is a picture of lies.

Asobi Asobase’s humor is really mean-spirited. There is no going two ways about it, this show revels in watching people get put in embarrassing or painful situations. The comedy is pure Schaedenfreude, as we see a group of friends be complete scumbags to each other, as true friends should! The cutesy artstyle and bubbly OP that hides the insanity of the actual episode put me off of my guard enough that it felt like a jumpscare of laughter when that first “rock-paper-scissors” game went on-screen.

In a way, I can compare it to an American show “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia”. Both shows focus on not-too-nice people doing terrible things to each other for their own selfish goals, and we get to laugh at them. Usually, I’m not down for this, but the show revels in the cast being just the best at being the worst, and the jokes are so well-executed that I just find myself enjoying the ride. The contrast of their cute, moe designs to the ugly and scary expressions reminds me too much of My Monster Secret for me NOT to love it.

Also, that ED is great and perfectly contrasts with the feelings of the viewer after watching it.

I’m hyped to watch more of this ridiculousness in the coming days, and it might have the chance of being the first show I actually review from last season.

My schedule is really bad.

  1. I agree. The first picture is full of lies. I recently watched this anime for a couple of episodes and it just has a pure comedy in it. Love that freaking ending song too. 😂
