Friday Funsies: The Three Worst Anime I’ve Watched So Far

I don’t watch a lot of bad anime, because I’m always of the opinion that with episodic series, it’s a bit of a waste of time to dedicate hours to something that doesn’t deserve anybody’s attention. However, as a self-proclaimed critic and reviewer, I do sometimes bite the bullet to watch some bad shows. Mostly, this is just to remind myself of exactly what a good anime should NOT do, but a little bit of it is because I wanna laugh at something dumb.

I’m The Luminous Mongoose, and this Friday, I’ll be talking about the three worst shows that I’ve ever watched so far.

P. S. Worst does not mean I didn’t find any enjoyment out of it. Actually, the fact that these shows have redeeming qualities makes it worse, because it taunts me with the idea of a better show, but doesn’t go through with it.

Also, feel free to tell me how wrong I am in the comments below!

Mirai Nikki

The reason why I dislike this show is because it basically skewed my tastes as an anime fan during my younger years. Of all the shows that had been suggested to me by my friends, (Madoka, Panty and Stocking, Death Note) the one I decided to watch first, and the ONLY anime I watched for a while, was this hot mess.

The characters were generic as fuck, the animation quality was okay at best, the plot was completely nonsensical, and it had more E D G E in it than a pair of shoes stuffed with razorblades.

The worst part? I liked the show.

As a dumb teenager, I was so enveloped in a show thinking that edgy = deep, that I was actually pushing it as the best anime I’ve watched ever. Like, come on past me, that was the ONLY anime you’ve watched back then that wasn’t a children’s shounen anime!

Due to that, I was biased against my now favorite genre, SoL and Drama anime, thinking they were just trash pandering to lonely weebs. I instead opted for more edgy shows, and ending up not liking them. The one exception is Death Note, which thankfully made me open my eyes to the existence of smarter anime, and I’ve never looked back.

It just sucks that I chose not to watch the other shows that would eventually make me fall in love with the medium of anime.

“Better than Madoka” How do I punch myself six years ago?!

Baka no Test

The show that made me realize I dislike harems and what I believe what the most “generic” anime would look like.

The protagonist is complete garbage and I literally cannot stand watching the “romance” in it. Most of the main girls exist because they want to jump on the MC’s dick for no reason, and if not his, the redhead guy who I wish was the protagonist instead because he’s kinda interesting.

It doesn’t help that almost every single character are walking cliches who don’t even flesh themselves out and adhere only to the few things that make them funny and run it to the ground. It may be a comedy, but you can have comedy and characters, you don’t have to sacrifice them for the sake of jokes.

I did like this show at first because the school combat system was actually pretty fun, but the episode that pushed me into “FUCK THIS” territory was when the flat-chested tsundere suddenly falls in love with the MC because……………he’s nice?

Mediocrity is Hot.

With how many much better shows I have on my backlog right now, I doubt I’ll be coming back to this show anytime soon.

Back Street Girls

I was so disappointed at this waste of a hilariously offensive idea. Yakuza undergoing sex change to become idols so they can pay off their debts is hilarious, and the jokes write themselves!

The jokes were definitely there, the writing was witty and hilarious, and the voice acting was on point, and it is overall a straightforward and faithful adaptation.

BUT!

The production quality was just lazy to an offensive degree. I can forgive cheap, I can forgive simple, heck, I can forgive sloppy, because Kemono Friends is all three of those things and I love that show.

But here, it just feels so much like J. C. Staff didn’t care enough about the manga to give it a decent budget. I personally cannot stand watching this despite the great writing and acting, because it just looks ugly, and the comedy aspect alone is not nearly enough to grab me. I’d rather have no adaptation at all than this cutting into JC Staff’s other, better productions.

When it’s still, the art is just fine, but there is almost no other movement besides the mouths. It might as well have been an episode of the Annoying Orange but with anime girls, better voice-acting, and actually funny jokes.

Wait a minute, now that I say it like that…………..

Okay, I’ve changed my mind, the show on this spot is actually-

Big Order

From the same studio that bought you Mirai Nikki, comes Big Order. As much as I rag on Mirai Nikki, I have to admit that the over-the-top action and rule-of-cool almost made up for everything else around it. If nothing else, as trashy as a show can get, they should at least me able to have SOME level of professional tact, so I had hopes that-

  1. I personally enjoyed Baka and Test, but I won’t argue against any of your points. It’s not a show for everyone.

    My own worst 3 are…

    1: Shadow Star Narutaru
    2: Kiss X Sis
    3: Popotan

  2. Nyaruko was so bad that it was so good. There’s absolutely no reason to watch that show (and multiple seasons for that matter), but then I just continued for the memes 😂😂😂… and also the WT——

  3. Big Order… Like Dimension W and Gangsta (which aired about the same time)… Shows that had good ideas and always seemed to be JUST on the edge of breaking out and getting good.

    But never did.

  4. Haven’t seen Baka no Test, but I’ve seen Mirai Nikki, and Big Order. Mirai Nikki can at least be entertaining while Big Order was just a mess. Oh, that ribbon part, at that point there was no return. Still shocked how dumb it got.

Whenever I make the eventual list of worst animes I’ve seen I bet someone would flip a table because of what I would put on there. Here’s a taste of it.

    1. Mahouka Koukou no Rettousei (The Irregular at Magic High School)
    2. Boku no Hero Academia S1
    3. Assassination Classroom S2

  5. I haven’t seen any of those anime series, so I hope I’m not missing much.

I guess my worst three that I’ve seen would be in no particular order…

    Debutante Detective Corps
    Mars of Destruction
    Bludgeoning Angel Dokuro-chan

  6. I might as well agree with your list, but boy oh boy, you haven’t watched Ousama Game (The King’s Game)

Give the first episode a go and let me know if you’ll die of boredom for the laziness of the plot, and the loophole that exists there. HAHAHAHA
